Winning Combinations

NA chess teams and players emerge victorious from state tournament.
The Newark Academy Chess Team brought home some serious souvenirs from the New Jersey State Grade Level tournament in November. The NA teams earned the top spot in the state for 6th and 7th grades, second place for 11th grade and third place for 8th grade.

Jeremy Glassman earned first place in the state for 11th grade, winning all five of his games. Taran Idnani came in second place for 6th grade. Warren Sunada-Wong won third place for 7th grade, statewide. Warren began studying chess in earnest when he entered Newark Academy last year.

The Chess Club at NA continues to grow and develop, producing strong players and teams. The club is now creating a comprehensive program to guide interested students from beginner- to master player-level. As part of that initiative, the club invited Pete Tamburro, award-winning chess teacher and former chess writer for the Star Ledger, to conduct a series of lessons for Middle School team members throughout the fall.

NA Chess is proud to celebrate its accomplishments in tournament play, and to offer a welcoming environment to any student interested in learning the game.
