NA's Newest Faculty and Staff Members

As we begin 2014-2015, please welcome these new members of the community.
As we begin the 2014-2015 academic year, please welcome the new members of the Newark Academy community:
 
ENGLISH
Elizabeth LaPadula returns to Newark Academy as the lead eighth grade English teacher. Betsy was an NA faculty member from 1997-2010. She took time off to be with her twin sons and spent a year at the Red Oaks School, helping to establish their Middle School program. Betsy holds a Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) from Drew University, an MA from Dartmouth College and a BA from Middlebury College.
 
MATH
Erik Jacobsen is already a familiar sight around Newark Academy. He has substituted in NA higher-level math classes and now joins NA as a part-time faculty member. He holds a PhD and MA from Princeton University, and a BA from Cornell University.
 
Michael Thayer started his career in teaching at The Beacon School in Manhattan. Before coming to NA, he taught math at Summit High School. He will be teaching higher-level math and STEM-inar courses at NA. Michael holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Chicago and a BA from Rutgers University.
 
SCIENCE
Caitlin Berkefeld most recently worked as an adjunct at Montclair State University, and as a long-term AP Biology substitute at Kent Place School. She holds an MS and a BS from Montclair State University.
 
STAFF
Alexandra Holzman, Associate Director of Admission
Alex comes to us from the Peddie School, where she worked as Assistant Director of Admission. Prior to that, she worked in the Admission office at Morristown-Beard School for five years. Alex is a graduate of Drew University, where she earned her BA in Behavioral Sciences.
 
David Kapferer, Director of Technology
Dave comes to NA from Lancaster Country Day School in Pennsylvania. In addition to coordinating educational technology initiatives, he has taught STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) subject-area courses. Dave earned an MS in Instructional Media from Wilkes University and holds a BA in Science, Technology and Society from Lehigh University.

Kerri Speck, Associate Director of College Counseling
Before coming to NA, Kerri served as assistant director of Admissions at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. She also served as senior associate director of Admissions at Muhlenberg College. She holds a BA in Psychology from Bucknell University.
