Putting Down Roots

NA students and parents help create community garden in Newark.
Upper School students and their families traveled to Newark on a sunny April Sunday to transform a vacant lot into a community garden.

The event was organized by the NAPA Gardening Committee and the NA Community Service Council. Volunteers showed up ready to work, toting their shovels and rakes. Within a few hours they had created the foundation of a community garden with flower gardens and raised beds for vegetables, all ready for planting, growing and harvesting.

“The students’ desire to make a difference really showed,” said Jesus Mercado, parent of Aryana Mercado ’18 and organizer of the NAPA Gardening Committee.

“We are so lucky to be able to give back to the city of our school’s birth and growth,” added NA Dean of Students, Pegeen Galvin.

By the end of the day, residents of the Newark neighborhood had already begun to plant and plan future projects to make the community garden a neighborhood hub and destination.
