The Gift of Shakespeare

The Soranno family presents NA with Prospero's staff.
Each spring, the 7th grade enacts Shakespeare’s The Tempest, piecing together scenes from all of the classes into one beautiful performance for the 6th grade. When Juliana Soranno ’19 was part of that 7th grade performance, she and her father made a prop to use – the iconic staff, wielded by Prospero in the play.

Now in 8th grade, Juliana and her father collaborated again. With a beautiful piece of wood they found in their yard at home they fashioned a new staff, carved and decorated with subtle, ornate symbols. The father-daughter team presented the staff to English teacher Alexandra Mahoney at a recent Middle School Morning Meeting.

"This gift is so precious because it was a labor of love, artistry and generosity,” said Ms. Mahoney.
