  • Newark Academy Holds 247th Convocation

    Newark Academy Convocation was on September 16, 2020, with the NA community coming together virtually while in the building for the school's 247th opening school year celebration. New and returning Newark Academy students, faculty, administrators, and staff participated in the annual ceremony that is a time-honored tradition whereby the school community celebrates the start of a new academic year and also recognizes long-serving faculty. 

    Due to COVID-19, the event was held with students in their advisor groups, watching over a YouTube livestream. Head of School Donald M. Austin addressed the students, as did student council president Mikey Marcus ’21. Dean of Faculty Traci L. Osterhagen Brock recognized the faculty longevity milestones.

  • Five Newark Academy Students Make National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinals

    More than 1.5 million juniors across the United States entered the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program, and five students from Newark Academy made it to the semifinal round of the prestigious academic competition, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors.
    Elaine Choy ’21, Annika Inampudi ’21, Samantha Parelli ’21, Eric Weng ’21, and Andrew Zabelo ’21 made the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinal round, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced. The five will get to continue the competition for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships.

    According to the NMSC, to become a finalist, the semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the semifinalist's academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test.

  • Newark Academy Holds Annual Peer Retreat

    Newark Academy held its annual Peer Leader training retreat on NA's 68-acre campus from August 26-28. Forgoing the annual trip to the Pocono Environmental Educational Center in Dingmans Ferry, PA, due to COVID-19, 16 seniors gathered at the school to discuss what it really means to be a role model in word and deed. Together, they developed active listening skills, learned to give constructive feedback to others, experienced the stages of group development and facilitated productive discussion. In addition, Peer Leaders participated in a group consensus co-leader selection process and planned their initial peer group activities.

  • Newark Academy’s Drama Department Hosting Auditions for “She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms”

    Newark Academy’s Drama Department is hosting auditions for “She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms,” by playwright Qui Nguyen, on Wednesday, September 9 from 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. and Thursday, September 10 from 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Callbacks will take place as needed on Friday, September 11.

    Description: A comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games. “She Kills Monsters,” tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. Tilly's sister Agnes loses herself in her sister's game to reclaim their connection. In the high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and ’90s pop culture, the acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

  • Newark Academy’s Dan Bailey-Yavonditte Named National Fencing Coach of the Year

    Newark Academy’s Dan Bailey-Yavonditte was already regarded as a top high school fencing coach in the state of New Jersey. Now he’s been recognized as the best in the country -- the USA Fencing 2020 National High School Coach of the Year. 

    Dan's achievement comes after helping Newark Academy to clinch the Boys Fencing New Jersey Interscholastic Fencing Association (NJIFA) Team Tournament Title for the first time, after winning the District 3 and Prep B Championships. The second-year coach was nominated by four Minutemen fencers.

    “It’s just an honor to be nominated. New Jersey has so many committed and talented high school coaches. To be selected out of the country’s coaches is pretty amazing,” Dan told USA Fencing. “I really enjoy working with high school students as a coach. That they thought well enough of their experience to nominate me is amazing. It’s their effort that makes the team what it is. It’s their hard work, their willingness to put the work into their individual fencing and supporting their teammates that make our team great … Being nominated by them is pretty cool because they’re a great bunch of kids.”

  • Newark Academy Students Participate in Cornell Virtual Internship

    Six Newark Academy students were set to embark on an in-person internship with Dr. So Yeon Yoon from Cornell University, who previously worked with students interested in STEM, Artificial Intelligence, and Virtual Reality at Newark Academy in the fall of 2019. With the seeds planted for a budding relationship, the original plan was to have the students come to Ithaca, NY for a summer internship.
    However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, they transitioned online, with Ryan Kim ’22, Molly Cantillon ’21, Kaya Patel ’22, Kayla Cohen ’21, Julia Seebach ’23 and Lizzie Schwartz ’21, completing virtual summer internships. Their efforts to successfully pivot to an online program culminated in presenting their projects at Mixed Reality @ Cornell consortium, which gathers efforts from across Cornell’s campuses that relate to augmented and virtual reality and their core disciplines of computer vision, computer graphics, and human-computer.
