Donald Austin was appointed Head of School for Newark Academy in 2007. In this role, Don has worked with the Board of Trustees and the administration to accomplish the school’s mission and launch many major initiatives. He implemented the Academy’s Immersion Program, Capstone Experiences, June Term and the Newark Scholars Program. He reorganized and invigorated the community service program, launched the STEM initiative and led the Rise & Flourish Campaign to success, resulting in the construction of the Upper School Academic Center and expanded athletic facilities. Don served as President of the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools from 2012-2014 and was recently elected a member of the national Country Day Schools Headmasters’ Association.
Prior to joining Newark Academy, Don served as Resident Director of the School Year Abroad in Rennes, France, an academic, cultural and linguistic immersion program for students from a consortium of high schools including 44 top independent school across the country.
From 1985-2000, Don held a variety of teaching and administrative posts at the Collegiate School in New York: French teacher, Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages, Dean of Students, and Coordinator of International Programs. He promoted significant experiential components in the school program by organizing school-to-school exchanges in France, Spain, the Czech Republic and Argentina. He also served as chair of Collegiate’s Honor Committee.
Don earned an undergraduate degree in English and French from Georgetown University, a master’s degree in French Language and Civilization from New York University, and a master’s of philosophy in French Studies, also from New York University. Don is married to Karolyn Ide, a magazine writer and editor. They have three sons, Ben ’12, Charles ’15 and George ’15.
