Steps to Apply to Newark Academy

  • Application and Transcripts

    Due: December 16, 2019

    The first step is to submit the online admission application and application fee. Copies of the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school transcripts should also be uploaded to the application portal or emailed to by the above deadline.
  • Student Interview and Writing Sample

    Must take place by January 27, 2020

    Once we have received your online application and 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school transcripts, a member of our Office will contact you to arrange the required student interview and on-campus writing sample. If you are applying to Newark Academy internationally, we will be able to accommodate a Skype interview. Please contact our Office for more information.
  • Teacher Recommendations

    Due: January 27, 2020

    Recommendations from three teachers are required for each applicant and should be initiated through our online application portal. Recommendations should be completed by the student’s current English, Math, and another teacher of the student’s choice. If an applicant has the same teacher for more than one subject, the teacher must complete one form for each individual subject. Newark Academy recommends that families wait until December to ask teachers about requesting recommendations so that they have the time to get to know your child.
  • School Transcript

    2017-2018 & 2018-2019 School Transcripts due December 16, 2019
    2019-2020 Official First Marking Period Transcript due January 27, 2020

    Each applicant must arrange for a copy of his/her school transcript to be sent to Newark Academy. Parents must download, print and sign the Transcript Release forms, and give it to the applicant’s current or prior school. The school(s), in turn, should send the student’s transcript including any standardized testing to Newark Academy. Please note the above deadlines for 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 transcripts, and the second deadline for 2019-2020 transcript. The Transcript Release forms can be found to the right under Application Forms.
  • Admission Testing

    Due: Scores must be submitted prior to January 27, 2020

    All applicants must take an admission test during the current academic year. Newark Academy applicants can take the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) on several Saturdays from October through February (visit for detailed information about testing). We will also accept the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT); visit for details. If you would like your child to take the SSAT in lieu of the ISEE you must arrange for his/her scores to be sent to Newark Academy prior to the January 27, 2020 deadline. There is no need for an applicant to take both of these tests. The ISEE and SSAT require a three-week advance registration, so please plan ahead. (ISEE School Code: 310915, SSAT School Code: 5296)

  • What type of school is Newark Academy?

    Newark Academy is a co-educational independent day school for grades 6-12, located in Livingston, New Jersey. The admission office seeks to enroll students of great character and academic ability who will take full advantage of our rigorous academic curriculum and numerous extracurricular activities.
  • When should I apply to Newark Academy?

    Newark Academy will accept applications for admission from September 3 through December 16, 2019 for the 2020-2021 academic year. Please visit our admission procedures for a description of our five-step application process.
  • How many students attend Newark Academy?

    Newark Academy enrolls approximately 613 students per year. The average class size is 13 and there are no classes that have an enrollment of more than 18 students. The maximum enrollment breakdown is as follows:

  • How many applications does Newark Academy receive annually?

    Each year Newark Academy receives more than 600 applications for less than 100 available spaces.
  • What is the tuition at Newark Academy? What additional expenses should I expect?

    The 2019-20 tuition is $42,175. Additional costs which include, but are not limited to, books, annual lunch fee, and technology expenses, range from $1,500-$2,000. Door-to-door transportation is available to over 70 towns through a separate contract. Transportation costs range from $3,200-$4,900.
  • How can I visit Newark Academy?

    There are three ways to visit Newark Academy.
    1. Attend one of our Open House.

    2. For families unable to attend an Open House, student-led tours are available by appointment. Please call the Administrative Assistant Sylvia Ciccone at (973) 992-7000 ext. 343 to schedule a tour.

    3. All applicants will visit for an interview with an admission associate, and their parents have the opportunity to meet with a member of the admission staff at that time if interested. Space permitting, first-time applicants to the Middle or Upper School will be invited for a full day visit, which includes the student interview, as well as an opportunity to shadow a current student host to classes and lunch.
  • How can I afford a Newark Academy education?

    Maintaining socio-economic diversity is a priority of the Academy. Our financial aid office distributes more than $3 million each year in financial grants (money families do not have to pay back). In order to qualify for financial aid you must demonstrate need by completing our financial aid application process.
