Boys' Tennis Wins 8th Straight County Title

The Newark Academy boys’ tennis team blanked Millburn to win their eighth straight Essex County Tournament (ECT) title on Sunday, May 3, marking the 27th ECT win in program history.

The top-seeded Minutemen kicked off the tournament by routing the last-seeded (#16) Bloomfield in the first round. They then faced #8 West Orange in the quarter finals, coming out victorious with another 5-0 win. 

It was on to the semifinals on Sunday, May 3, and the Minutemen rolled over the fifth-seeded Columbia 5-0 to move on to the championship at noon. On the opposite side of the bracket, the #2 seeded Millburn Millers advanced over the #3 Livingston Lancers, to make it to the finals. Newark Academy then stunned the Millers with a 5-0 win to take home their eighth-straight ECT title. The Minutemen did not drop a set the entire tournament. Singles champion Andrew Zielinski went undefeated. 

With this win, the Minutemen move to 15-1 on the season. The Minutemen return to regular season play on Monday, May 4 for a rematch against Columbia. They host the 53rd Annual Newark Academy Tennis Invitational on Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10 and then have their eyes set on the state tournament. They will look to defend their state championship title, which they have held for the last 14 years.
