Middle School Students Learning

Welcome to the Newark Academy Middle School! Here, students in grades 6-8 begin an exciting journey of self-discovery, independence, and growth in an environment tailored to meet the unique needs of early adolescence.

Our approach to learning empowers students to make thoughtful decisions and fosters a strong sense of belonging, all within our close-knit, supportive community. Guided by passionate, middle-school-focused teachers, students are encouraged to take meaningful ownership of their learning and build confidence and self-awareness. In striving for intellectual excellence, our Middle Schoolers gain the critical skills needed to move onto the Upper School and develop a love of learning.

Our House System unites students across grade levels to promote peer mentorship, friendships and a vibrant school spirit through fun-filled activities and beloved NA traditions.

Signature NA Middle School Experiences:

MS Arts

From music and studio arts to filmmaking and photography, all Middle School students are encouraged to take their creativity to new heights within the NA arts program. Students find joy in creative storytelling, while strengthening their communication skills and emotional intelligence.

MS Athletics

The importance of commitment, sportsmanship and teamwork are just a few of the lessons for NA’s Middle School athletes. All students participate in the sports program in order to help develop leadership skills and learn to lean into challenges.

Capstone Experiences

At the end of the year, Middle School students take part in Capstone Experiences – activities on campus and field trips that promote teamwork, independence, and risk-taking. These experiences culminate with grade-level overnight field trips.

Color Wars

Color Wars at NA is one of the many highlights of the school year. Divided into teams that represent a color, students participate in a series of spirited competitions in order to gain points. As they are tasked with activities, students bond while learning sportsmanship and friendly competition.

Halloween Parade

MS students have the opportunity to show off their creativity, funny and spooky costumes during our traditional Halloween Parade.

Hershey Park Trip

The 8th grade class travels to Hershey Park each year to enjoy the waterpark for the day. The trip is among the many joyful experiences that the class takes part in leading up to their Celebration Night (graduation).

House System

NA’s house system brings students together across grade levels to form vibrant, supportive communities. Each student joins a “house,” where they’ll build friendships and work as a team during fun activities, traditions and friendly competitions throughout the year. The House System fosters an environment where every student feels connected and valued within the Middle School.

Stanley Cone

This annual floor hockey tournament began in the mid-80's as an Upper School tradition. It has since become a Middle School staple with the winners of the tournament earning bragging rights and adding their names to the Stanley Cone!

Student Portfolios

At the end of the school year, sixth- and seventh-grade students present portfolios of lessons learned and share their goals for the future with their parents and advisors. Eighth-grade students host an extended discussion, reflecting on their Middle School experience as a whole and looking ahead to Upper School with a strong sense of progress and accomplishment.

MS Talent Show

Each year, students are invited to take the stage and showcase their talents. Exclusively for NA’s Middle School students, the talent show is a treasured event that allows students to nurture their passions.

Trivias and Kahoots

Whether it's a battle amongst NA’s houses or a test of Thanksgiving know-hows, MS students engage in fun-filled trivias to help build community.

Winterfest

Organized by the Middle School Student Council, the annual Winterfest provides students in all three grade levels with the opportunity to build strong social connections. Middle School students are invited to enjoy games, activities and dinner. Past Winterfests have included movie screenings, ping pong and an inflatable obstacle course.
