Community Engagement

At Newark Academy, community engagement is an opportunity for our students to embody a generosity of spirit while cultivating empathy, cultural competence and self-awareness. Grounded in the school's commitments of equity and belonging, community partnership and civic engagement, and sustainability, every student participates in our Community Engagement Program. Through service, leadership and meaningful partnerships, students support local communities and explore causes that resonate with their passions, and ultimately become thoughtful, compassionate leaders prepared to make a difference in the world.

In The Middle School

From joining the school’s Community Service Club to participating in NA’s dedicated Day of Action and grade-wide activities, Middle Schoolers collaborate and serve in many ways, as they make critical assessments of societal issues.

In The Upper School

In the Upper School, students complete four community engagement opportunities each year and reflect on their experiences through a portfolio. This requirement is designed to help students build meaningful connections within their communities, use reflection to deepen their understanding of the impact of service, and support Newark Academy's commitment to equity and belonging, community engagement and sustainability.

Service-Based Leadership Opportunities

There are several opportunities for NA students to take the lead and support their local or broader communities through community engagement.

Community Engagement Council (CEC)

Service Leaders Working Group (SLWG)

The Service Leaders Working Groups (SLWG) is designed to support the development of students engaged in nonprofit and philanthropic leadership, including those serving on junior/teen boards, running their own nonprofits, or holding leadership roles in local organizations. The SLWG holds monthly networking lunches with alumni and community leaders and also engages in specialized skill development such as grant writing and budgeting workshops.

Creativity, Activity, Service Project (CAS)

The Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) Project is a signature experience in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. Over the course of two years, students design and implement a collaborative project that engages with the world outside of high school classes. The CAS Project is an opportunity for students to take ownership of their learning, inspire others through action and demonstrate how thoughtful leadership can contribute to stronger, more connected communities. Meet The Team

The Office of Community Engagement oversees all service-learning, service and community engagement programming in Grades 6-12. Throughout the school year, the office sponsors a wide variety of opportunities around a yearly theme, in conjunction with various stakeholders of the NA community.
