  • Alex Kotzen ’19 Wins Essex County Title

    Newark Academy’s Alex Kotzen ‘19 defeated Leo Kupferman of Montclair 6-2, 6-0 in the Essex County Tournament (ECT) singles final at Livingston High on May 18, 2019. Thomas Ito ’18 was the last Minuteman to win the ECT singles crown in 2017, and Chris Paradis ’16 won it in 2016. This is Alex's first ECT title. He was injured the past two years and he played second singles as a freshman in 2016.

  • NA Boys’ Golf wins the Non-Public B State Title

    The Newark Academy golf team won the Non-Public B State Championship with a score of 335, 14 strokes better than Montclair Kimberly Academy. It’s the first state championship in boys’ golf since 2011.

  • NA Middle School Swimming Team Raised $5,700 for Charity

    The Middle School swim team raised just over $5,700 this past season during NA’s fifth annual swim-a-thon. The team donated $4,000 to the West Essex YMCA to help with their free one-week Safety Around Water classes and used the rest of the money to donate more than 400 pairs of goggles and caps to the Recreation Department in Newark.

  • Sam Keller ’19 Honored with Scholar Athlete Award

    Every year the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSAA) asks all of its member schools to select a single student to receive a scholar athlete award. This year, Newark Academy selected three-sport athlete Sam Keller ’19. The senior was on the Newark Academy varsity soccer, basketball and softball teams, as well as was a 1,000 point scorer in basketball and recorded 100 hits in softball.

  • NA’s Nate Drogin ’22 Wins Prep B Individual Title

    Newark Academy freshman Nate Drogin won the Prep B Individual Title with a score of 72 on May 16, 2019. The accomplishment comes on the heels of Nate winning the Essex County Tournament Individual Title and helping the boys’ golf team win the North Jersey Non-Public B Title.

  • Boys’ Golf Team Wins Sectionals

    Newark Academy boy’s golf team earned a spot in the Tournament of Champions (TOC) after winning the North Jersey Non-Public B title with a score of 325, edging Montclair Kimberly Academy by four strokes. The Minutemen have the Prep B Championship on May 15 before the TOC on May 20 at Hopewell Valley Golf Club. The sectional title is the Minuteman’s eighth time overall and first time since 2010.

  • Newark Academy Golf Coach Officiating PGA Championship

    When Tiger Woods and the rest of the PGA Tour tee off for the PGA Championship May 16-19, Newark Academy Golf Coach and PGA Golf Pro Robin Curtis will be officiating the Major event.
     
    In her fourth year on the PGA of America Rules Committee, she is assigned two to five assignments each year depending on her work schedule, with about 13-16 events a year to choose from, ranging from the collegiate level up to the Ryder Cup and PGA Championship.

  • NA Girls’ Track and Field Team Wins Super Essex Conference

    Newark Academy girls’ track and field team won the Super Essex Conference on May 10, 2019. Together, they scored 145.5 points, besting Malcom X Shabazz High School (131), Cedar Grove (53), Glen Ridge (43), University (19), Technology (16), Immaculate Conception Montclair (15), St. Vincent Academy (12.5) and Weequahic (10). 
     
    “It was an exciting day,” Coach Tim McCall said. “Like the boys victory last Monday, we were propelled by both a few athletes who scored first or second in several events and many more girls who stepped up and scored in third through sixth places.”

  • NA names Scott Rowling Girls’ Soccer Head Coach

    Newark Academy Athletics is pleased to announce the appointment of Scott Rowling as the next head coach of the Girls’ Varsity Soccer Program at Newark Academy. Previously the head coach at the Tilton School in New Hampshire, as well as several other New York schools, Coach Rowling brings to Newark Academy an established track record of successfully preparing girls’ teams to play championship-caliber soccer.

  • NA Adds Two 100 Goal Scorers in Boys’ Lacrosse

    Newark Academy added two 100 goal scorers to the career goals list in seniors Will Mulligan and Jack Snyder. Will notched goal 100 in a 15-8 win vs. Blair on May 4, 2019, two days after Jack Snyder reached the milestone in a 18-3 win over Nutley on May 6, 2019. The pair became the seventh and eighth 100 goal scorers in Newark Academy boy’s lacrosse, joining, Scott Redmond ’09 (163), Tommy Damiano ’09 (136), Brandon Rothman ’12 (130), Mike Acierno ‘08 (120), Brandon Dempsey ’15 (108) and Riley Kolek ’15 (107).

  • NA Boy’s Track and Field Wins Prep B

    Newark Academy boys’ track and field won the Prep B Championship for the sixth-straight year, taking the title on May 6, 2019 while hosting the Prep B Track and Field Championships at Newark Academy’s campus.
     
    “Track and field frequently is a sport that loves its all-stars,” coach Tim McCall said. “You have one or two really talented athletes and they can earn a lion's share of the points. While we had few athletes take firsts and seconds, the vast majority of our points came from boys who stepped up and scored in the back-half of the field: many 4ths, 5ths, and 6th place finishes helped shore up the larger point shares we earned from a few athletes. As a result, this victory genuinely was a full-team victory.”

  • Nate Drogin ’22 Places First, NA Second in ECT Tournament

    Freshman Nate Drogin was the County Medalist with a first-place finish and a low score of 72 to help lead Newark Academy to a second-place finish at the Essex County Tournament in golf at Byrne Golf Course in West Orange. Millburn High School won the match, while senior Antoine Chouraqui ’19 tied for the second-best individual score with a 73.

  • Seniors Sam Burggraf and Sam Keller Reach 100 Career Hits

    Newark Academy seniors Sam Burggraf and Sam Keller each reached the 100-hit milestone in softball, and the teammates did so in the span of a couple of days. Sam B. knocked her 100th hit on April 16, 2019 vs. Montclair, while Sam K. did so a couple of days later on April 18, 2019 vs. Bloomfield.
     
    Sam K. – a three-sport athlete at Newark Academy also playing soccer and basketball – is the only athlete in school history to score 1,000 points in basketball and have 100 hits in softball. She was named 1st Team All SEC Liberty Division as a freshman, Honorable Mention SEC American Division as a sophomore and 1st Team SEC Liberty Division as a junior. Sam B. was named Second Team SEC Liberty Division as a freshman, Honorable Mention SEC American Division as a sophomore, and Second Team SEC Liberty Division as a junior.

    Newark Academy’s Victoria Pevzner ’24 won the gold medal in fencing for girl’s foil, 12 and under, at the North American Cup Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio last month. Check out the video of her final bout here.

  • New Head Coach of the Varsity Field Hockey Team

    The Athletics Department is excited to announce that Noelle Shirey will be the new head coach of the varsity field hockey program. Noelle joined the NA community in July 2018 as the assistant director for alumni annual giving in the Office of Institutional Advancement and was the head coach for the junior varsity field hockey team in the fall. This spring, she is the head coach for the girls’ junior varsity lacrosse team.

    Newark Academy freshman Nathan Drogin came in second place for the 14-15 year-old boys group for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals at Augusta National on April 7, leading right up to the PGA’s Masters Tournament on April 11. Nathan was beaten by four.

    Veronica Czyzewski ’18 Named All-American, Third Place Finish in NCAA Championships

    Newark Academy alumna Veronica Czyzewksi ’18 was named a first-team All-American following a third-place finish in the saber in the NCAA Championships for fencing.   • Freshman Selah Dungey Named to All-State Teams

    Newark Academy’s winter track team member Selah Dungey ’22 capped off a championship winning season with All-State recognition. Selah was named to NJ.com’s All-Non Public B First Team as well as the Mile Split NJ State Freshman Team  for the high jump. The honors come on the heels of winning the Non-Public B high jump at the NJSIAA indoor track group championships with a high jump of 5-2, tying the meet record.

  • Fencer Sobia Sammah Reid ’23 Wins Silver at the North America Cup

    Sobia Sammah Reid ’23 won silver in Division 3 Women's Epee at the North America Cup in Cleveland, OH on March 4, 2019. One of eight tournaments hosted by USA Fencing each season, the event features young fencers. After a nearly seven-hour fencing event, Sobia took the final to overtime after nine minutes and a 10-10 tie.

    Danning Hu ’20 Breaks Two NA Records in Non-Public B Final

    Danning Hu ’20 broke two Newark Academy school records in girls’ swimming in the Non-Public B Final versus four-time champion Trinity Hall at the College of New Jersey on Feb. 24. Danning broke the 200 Individual Medley (IM) record with a time of 2:09.03 and 100 freestyle record with a 53.63. The previous IM record was held by Jen Koide ’13 with a 2:09.49, set in 2013 and the 100 freestyle record was held by Andrea Galea ’16 with a 53.99 set in 2014.

  • Sam Keller and Ivy Bethea Join NA’s 1,000 Point Club

    In one game, Newark Academy girls’ basketball doubled the number of players on the school’s 1,000 career points list.  Sam Keller ’19 scored her 1,000th point on a layup in the first quarter while Ivy Bathea ’19 scored her 1,000th point on a 3-pointer in the second quarter. Keller only needed one point and Ivy needed three. They both ended with nine points in the win over Caldwell. The other two girls in the NA 1,000-point club are Brenda Baldazi ’92 and former New Jersey Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year Jocelyn Willoughby ’16.

  • NA Freshman Selah Dungey Wins Non-Public B High Jump

    Newark Academy’s Selah Dungey ’21 won the Non-Public B high jump at NJSIAA indoor track group championships on Feb. 16 at the Bennett Center in Toms River. Selah became just the second freshman of the group meet weekend to win an individual event. With a high jump of 5-2, she tied the meet record matched by five others, most recently of which came last season.

  • NA Girls Swimming Heads Back to Non-Public B Final

    Newark Academy swimming coach Billy Blomn thinks this is the best girls’ team he’s had in two decades of coaching. If they can avenge the last year’s loss in the NJSIAA Non-Public B Final to top-seeded Trinity Fall on Feb. 24 at The College of New Jersey, they could cement that.

    “The girls worked really hard to get here,'' Billy said according NJ.com after the win over St. Rose at Raritan Bay YMCA in Perth Amboy on Feb. 18. “This is probably the best female group that I’ve had in my 20 years. I’m just hoping that we can keep the excitement up for one more meet.”

    Newark Academy’s Abby Parker ’19 and Michael Pyo ’22 place first in District 3 Fencing Championships

    Sophomore fencer Michael Pyo went undefeated in nine bouts to win the individual foil and lead Newark Academy to a third-place finish in the team competition at the District 3 Championship on Sunday in Livingston, N.J. With a 46, NA finished in front of Christian Brothers (45) and Gov. Livingston (41). NA senior fencer Abby Parker placed first in the individual saber on the girls’ side. In the final tally, the boys' team is in the State Tournament, two squads going to Squad States, and three individuals - Abby, Michael and Unna Nellutla '19 - going to Individual State Championships.

  • NA Girls’ Swimming Wins Essex County Championship

    The Newark Academy girls’ swimming avenged its only loss of the season to edge out Montclair and win the Super Essex Conference (SEC) Championship for the first time in school history on January 21, 2019.

    “We had a good meet on Thursday against Montclair where we lost by four,” Newark Academy coach Billy Blomn, said according to NJ.com. “We had some fast swimmers there and won seven or eight of the events in that meet. We knew with the scoring system things would be interesting today.”
     
    The point system for the SEC Championship are different of that than a dual meet, and relays are where teams can get the most points. The Minutemen were propelled to victory by a true team effort, not winning a single individual event, but winning two of the three relays.
     
    The SEC started the boys’ swimming Championship in 1965. The girls’ was started in 1974.

  • NA Hits Buzzer-Beater in Semis Before Cruising to Holiday Tournament Championship

    Senior Will Mulligan hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to lead Newark Academy past Oratory in the semifinals before the Minutemen cruised past Morristown-Beard for the Oratory Prep Christmas Tournament Title.
     
    Mulligan finished the semis with 10 points before pouring in 20 in the final, where NA won 58-46. Will Hutchinson ’19 averaged 15 points and 9.5 rebounds in the tournament.
