This past year, Newark Academy’s Asher Herman ’24 was named a Borlaug Scholar by the New Jersey Youth Institute World Food Prize at the Rutgers University School of Environmental and Biological Science.
In honor of its upcoming 250th anniversary year, the employees of Newark Academy joined together to visit and deepen the school’s connection with its origin city of Newark. On Tuesday, June 13, more than 130 Newark Academy faculty and staff embarked on a bus tour of the school’s four previous locations in the City of Newark — reflecting on the past before heading into the school’s 250th year.
Newark Academy alumnus Kai Youngren ’19 earned the prestigious honor of being named a 2023 Rhodes Scholar, a highly-coveted international postgraduate award for students to study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
Four Newark Academy students competed at the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas from April 25 to May 4, which brings together the best robotics teams from around the world to compete. NA students and their respective teams were chosen among the top 800 qualifying teams, out of more than 30,000 teams from 50 countries that initially competed for a spot at the World Competition.
Newark Academy conferred the degrees of 114 students from the Class of 2023 at the 249th Commencement Exercises in the Kirby Gymnasium on Sunday, June 11, 2023. The Class of 2023 boasted 65 International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidates, 34 National Merit Scholars and 21 Cum Laude Society Members.

The artwork of three Newark Academy IB/Advanced Art students is currently on display at the Inspired Minds: Young Artist Exhibition at the South Orange Performing Arts Center. Luke Betlow ’26, Saira Rajparia ’24 and Vivian Zhang ’24 were selected out of 1,000 entries by a jury of distinguished artists, photographers and curators to be included in this year’s exhibit.
During a day of reminiscing, catching up and celebrating more than 250 Newark Academy alumni returned home to campus to reconnect with each other, faculty and staff at Reunion on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
In a heartfelt and reminiscent celebration of the relationships built at Newark Academy that still persist even decades after graduating, the Alumni Association conferred its top honors to distinguished alumni — including three who met their spouses at NA. The awards were presented during the annual Alumni Awards Ceremony at Reunion on Saturday, May 6, 2023 in the NA Dining Room.

Alumnus Nihal Mehta ’95, co-founder of Eniac Ventures, returned to campus to speak to students in IB Economics and the Entrepreneurship and Business Club about his experiences at NA and his journey into venture capital. Students had many questions for Nihal about networking and becoming entrepreneurs.
Newark Academy’s theater arts program garnered ten nominations from Montclair State University’s Theatre Night FOXY Awards for both its Middle School spring production of The Giver and Upper School fall drama Clue.
The Newark Academy Mock Trial Team concluded its season as Northern New Jersey Regional Tournament Champions in the Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition. NA Mock Trial defeated Sussex County Champions Newton High School in a highly competitive regional round at the New Jersey State Bar Foundation in New Brunswick on March 1, 2023.
As part of the Global Speaker Series, Newark Academy’s Black History Month Speaker Dr. Bettina Love, an award-winning author and Columbia University professor, discussed the African origins of hip hop culture and civic empowerment to Newark Academy students on Monday, February 27 in the Coraci Performance Hall.
Newark Academy’s big band, Chameleon, and jazz combo, the NA Jazz Collective, each took first place in their respective categories at the 15th Annual Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival held at The New School of Jazz in New York City on February 18-19.
Newark Academy’s 10th annual Day of Giving raised $253,454 from alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends. A total of 366 individual donors came together to support the school’s academics, athletics, arts, financial aid and extracurricular activities.
