  • NA Welcomes New Head Coach of the Boys' Varsity Basketball Team

    Newark Academy’s athletic program is thrilled to announce that Deon Mingo is the new head coach of the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team. “Coach Mingo stood out as having the best combination of demeanor, ambition and relevant basketball experience to lead our program,” said Director of Athletics Ted Gilbreath. Coach Mingo is very excited to join the Newark Academy family and “to teach life lessons to student-athletes on and off the court and to help them strive for excellence throughout their lives.”

  • NA Welcomes New Head Coach of the Boys’ Tennis Team

    The Athletics Department is excited to welcome back Lou Scerra as the next head coach of the Boys’ Tennis Team. Coach Scerra spent the better part of a decade at Newark Academy as the assistant coach for the Boys' and Girls' Tennis Teams and as a faculty member in the English department. During his tenure at Newark Academy, the tennis program was arguably the best in the state. In the final season of his first term, he functioned as the interim head coach for most of the season and led the team to an undefeated record, a state number one ranking and an elusive Tournament of Champions crown.

  • The Minutemen Welcome Back John Sternlicht ’08 as Head Wrestling Coach

    The Athletics Department is pleased to announce that John Sternlicht ’08 is the next head wrestling coach. As a wrestler at Newark Academy, Coach Sternlicht won 140 matches and set the school records for wins in a season (44) and pins in a season (34). His 111 career pins ranked him second in New Jersey wrestling history at the time. He was also a three-time District 14 champion, a two time Essex County champion and a member of the football and track team.
