The Minutemen Welcome Back John Sternlicht ’08 as Head Wrestling Coach

The Athletics Department is pleased to announce that John Sternlicht ’08 is the next head wrestling coach. As a wrestler at Newark Academy, Coach Sternlicht won 140 matches and set the school records for wins in a season (44) and pins in a season (34). His 111 career pins ranked him second in New Jersey wrestling history at the time. He was also a three-time District 14 champion, a two time Essex County champion and a member of the football and track team.

Outside of NA, he was a freestyle state champion and a state runner-up in Greco-Roman wrestling and was selected to the All New Jersey team in both disciplines. He wrestled at Muhlenberg College after Newark Academy. Additionally, he has been an active coach and clinician while starting and running his own business. Most significantly, he was the head strength and conditioning coach at Ken Chertow's Gold Medal wrestling camps.

“His experience as a student-athlete at Newark Academy and his time under legendary coach Jay Gerish make him uniquely qualified to take the reins of the program. He understands what it takes for the members of the team to be successful both as wrestlers and students,” says Director of Athletics Ted Gilbreath.

Coach Sternlicht is excited to take on this new role since the wrestling program at Newark Academy is very close to his heart. His first-hand experience with balancing his athletic and academic commitments at NA puts him in “the position to be a positive role model to the wrestlers and make a meaningful impact on young men's lives.”
