Middle School French “Immersion-Style” Learning

Having already learned about colors, counting and animals, French Teacher Mary Lysinger decided to have an “immersion-style” class without leaving the NA campus. Visiting the David Teiger ’47 Gallery for Studio Arts, the class used the PAX Rwanda Embroideries of the Women of Savane Rutongo-Kabuye exhibit. Mary had her 6th and 7th grade French students identify colors, count animals and learn vocabulary.

The gallery of vibrant embroideries created by Rwandan artists provided the perfect classroom for a few reasons. “French is one of Rwanda’s official languages, the images were colorful, representational and accessible, and it was an environment to let the students feel more relaxed about their participation in the discussion,” Mary said.
