Newark Academy Eighth Graders Learn to Become Ethical Leaders
While the rest of NA’s student body was either on a field trip or taking the PSATs, the eighth grade spent the day on campus learning about ethical leadership. With the help of Director of Community Service Sarah Fischer and Director of Equity and Inclusion Gardy Guiteau, students took part in a morning of leadership and communication experiences, followed by an afternoon completing community service projects.
Before breaking off in three groups for their service project of sending a care-package for those being held in immigration detention centers, students heard from a George William Forson from Ghana, who was held in a detention center in Newark for seven months before he was released last Thursday, October 11.
Working with First Friends of NJ and NY, a nonprofit that upholds the inherent dignity the inherent dignity and humanity of detained immigrants and asylum seekers, and Sister Regina Holtz, students helped out with “stamp out despair” putting together folders for detainees that had paper, note cards greeting cards, Christmas cards, envelopes, stamps and a pen, along with a note from a student. “I can’t overvalue what you are doing this afternoon,” Gina told students.
