Newark Academy defeats Montclair Kimberly in Mock Trial, Moves on to Essex County Semifinals

NA’s Mock Trial’s plaintiff team beat Montclair Kimberly Academy (MKA) on Jan. 29. Represented by Student Attorneys Ethan Magistro ’19, Jessica Zheng ’20, and Henry Chardonnay ’21 (playing Aiden Lovecraft, friend of the plaintiff), Drew France ’22 (playing Dr. Dharma Pavlik, medical expert), and Alexandra Speck ’21 (playing Avery Mansion, the plaintiff), the team handily defeated MKA, and locked in a position for the Essex County Semifinals.
 
Mock Trial will compete on Jan. 30 against Joseph Kushner Academy, once again as the plaintiff, for a spot in the Essex County Finals. Family, friends, and alumni are invited to watch the trials, which begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Essex County Courthouse (Veteran’s Courthouse) in Newark, at 50 West Market Street.
 
Mock Trial empowers students to learn the art of performing a persuasive and cohesive argument while honing their critical thinking, teamwork, trial and public speaking skills and Students are coached by faculty members Benson Hawk and Rebecca Gordon, as well as Leo Gordon ’69, who serves as a federal judge on the United States Court of International Trade, NA parent Michael Hynes and NA parent Henry Powell.
