NA Closes in on $10K Goal After Solidary Sleep Out

34 kids and two faculty members didn’t let an April shower ruin their Solidary Sleep Out to raise money for the Covenant House in New Jersey to support youth homelessness. With the theme of “the stories behind the statistics, students heard directly from Dennis Barton who was on the streets for 13 years and is now the director of the Speaker’s Bureau, an organization that does outreach and education. Students also heard from one of the development directors at Covenant House NJ in Newark, Alexandra Polimeni, about the services Covenant House offers. Students had breakout sessions looking at the statistics of homelessness before closing the night by making 100 bagged meals for the Bridges Run the following day and held a discussion about their experiences and what they had learned throughout the night.
“Essentially, I run a conference on Homelessness before the students sleep out in solidarity for the night,” Director of Community Service Sarah Fischer said. “It is the perfect combination of experiential learning and more traditional education.”

NA Community Service has a goal of raising $10,000 by the end of the year, and are just shy at $8843. People can donate to a specific student or the full NA team here.
