Newark Academy’s Chameleon to Perform as Finalist at Charles Mingus Festival

Newark Academy’s nationally renowned jazz band, Chameleon, is among 12 finalist ensembles in the 12th Annual Charles Mingus Festival and High School Competition. The group entered an audio submission in December and will be performing with some of the nation’s top jazz programs on February 15 and 16 at The New School of Jazz and Jazz Standard in New York City. Newark Academy has been among the finalists several times in the past, achieving first place in 2014 and 2015.

"This is quite an accomplishment and an honor for our program,” Band Director Julius Tolentino shared. “This festival consistently has the top jazz bands in the country, and I'm excited for our students to be recognized at a national level. It's never about the competition aspect for me, but always about the music and community. The Charles Mingus Festival is a great example of that by celebrating Mingus' music and bringing together students from different communities that share a love of jazz music."
