Newark Academy Hosts MLK Day of Service
While classes were canceled on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, more than 100 members of the Newark Academy community participated in Newark Academy's annual MLK Day of Service on January 20 for a "day on" rather than a "day off." The event took place from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. beginning with an educational program at Newark Academy followed by service opportunities on campus and a service/education trip to Newark in keeping with this year’s community service theme aimed at reconnecting to the school’s roots in Newark.
Prior to participating in various service projects, volunteers heard from keynote speaker Aisha Glover and engaged in an educational program to honor Martin Luther King’s influence on our country, with special emphasis on his call to be an upstander and take action, big or small, to make a positive difference.

Aisha talked about equity and bringing awareness to Newark through expansion, as well as her work with the Newark Alliance, and her bid to Amazon for their potential headquarters to be in Newark. Aisha shared ways to create systemic change, advising everyone to find what they want to be "drum majors" about, non-conformity, and the urgency of the now.
On-campus service projects included decorating birthday gift boxes for kids in the foster care system, organizing supplies for the Midnight Run, and writing notes of encouragement for people battling homelessness.
