Newark Academy Junior Jeffery Keys Wins Scholastic Writing Competition

Newark Academy’s Jeffery Keys ’21 won a Scholastic Writing Competition Gold Key for a thoughtful and moving essay he wrote about racial stereotypes entitled, Caricatures and Citizenship Intertwined. He entered the essay into the Scholastic Writing Competition, winning a Gold Key, awarded to the very best works submitted in the region and is automatically considered for national-lever recognition. The essay stemmed out of a project form last year, when humanities teacher’s Ms. Edwards, Mr. Coe and Ms. Fischer created the citizenship project, completed by all sophomores in either AP U.S. History or American Experience and designed to help students gain a better understanding of the history of our nation by examining the development of our civil society and the changing idea of citizenship. Other student projects included Chinese and Indian immigration, police brutality, and women’s reproductive rights.
