Newark Academy’s Warren Sunada-Wong ’20 Awarded National Merit Scholarship Committee Scholarship

After being selected as finalists earlier this academic year, Newark Academy senior Warren Sunada-Wong was among the students chosen as one of the National Merit Scholarship winners nationwide. Each student received a scholarship worth $2,500 from the National Merit Scholarship Committee (NMSC) for their selection.
Warren was categorized under computer science.
According to the release from the NMSC, National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.
In September, five Newark Academy Seniors were selected as National Merit Scholars Semifinalists were among 1.5 million juniors across the United States that entered the 2020 Merit Scholarship Program.

The five, Grace Bu ’20, Eric D. Lieberman ’20, Kira Lu ’20, Lori Sun ’20 and Warren, made the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program final round, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced. One of 7,500 National Merit is a $2,500 Scholarships and represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors as Finalists.

National Merit Finalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, are endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm their student's earlier performance on the qualifying test.
