Newark Academy Students Participate in Cornell Virtual Internship

Six Newark Academy students were set to embark on an in-person internship with Dr. So Yeon Yoon from Cornell University, who previously worked with students interested in STEM, Artificial Intelligence, and Virtual Reality at Newark Academy in the fall of 2019. With the seeds planted for a budding relationship, the original plan was to have the students come to Ithaca, NY for a summer internship.
However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, they transitioned online, with Ryan Kim ’22, Molly Cantillon ’21, Kaya Patel ’22, Kayla Cohen ’21, Julia Seebach ’23 and Lizzie Schwartz ’21, completing virtual summer internships. Their efforts to successfully pivot to an online program culminated in presenting their projects at Mixed Reality @ Cornell consortium, which gathers efforts from across Cornell’s campuses that relate to augmented and virtual reality and their core disciplines of computer vision, computer graphics, and human-computer.

Molly and Ryan worked on a project entitled, “Improvising the Quality and Realism of VR Bicycling.” Kaya and Kayla did a Virtual Reality Concept Development Experiment on “How Virtual Environments Can Bridge Sensitive Gaps Through Scenario Training.” While Julie and Lizzie world on a project entitled “Navigating a Virtual Maze: Geometric & NonGeometric Environmental Cues.”
Dr. So Yeon Yoon is a professor in the Design Technology department at Cornell University. A leading the Design for User Experience with Technology (DUET) research lab at Cornell, Dr. Yoon’s work involves the intersection of science and user experience looking at applications of virtual reality technology.
After creating a partnership, beginning with the visit by Dr. Yoon last November. Working with students interested in STEM, Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality, Dr. Yoon and associates worked with students for a couple of hours in the hope that this work would continue during the year, culminating in a summer opportunity for NA students at her DUET lab at Cornell University.
