Newark Academy’s Michaela Wang ’21 named Finalist for 2020 Mahatma Gandhi Art & Writing Contest

Newark Academy senior Michaela Wang has been selected as a finalist in the 2020 Mahatma Gandhi Art & Writing Contest. You can read Michaela's winning essay, in which she analyzes Gandhi's Salt March letter, on the WAM blog.

The contest is run by the Association of Indians in America, South Jersey Chapter, which is held every year and is open to all middle and high school students in NJ. Several NA students have entered in the past and Benjamin Kany '18 won the contest in 2016. This year's prompt was to respond to the quotation, "Whenever you are confronted with an opponent, conquer him with love."

"I've always wondered what qualities characterize impactful leaders," Michaela said. "Through analyzing Mahatma Gandhi's salt march letter, a political and emotional provocation against British salt taxes, I realized that the innate power of words. I explore how, from the very diction Gandhi employs to the tone he projects, his conciliatory language can simultaneously subvert the reader and empower them to take action.  I too internalized this conciliatory language in my own writing style throughout the essay.  I'm elated to be nominated as a Top 12 Finalist by the Association of Indians in America, and encourage intrepid writers and to find weight in words."

An awards ceremony via Zoom is scheduled for Sunday, October 11, at which time the top contestants will receive prizes ranging from $50 to $250.
