Newark Academy Celebrates the Class of 2025 at Eighth Grade Graduation

Newark Academy celebrated the achievements of the eighth grade class and its symbolic move to the Upper School during a graduation ceremony on campus on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.

“This was an impressive and flexible class,” said Middle School Principal Tom Ashburn in his welcome address. Mr. Ashburn encouraged the students to find something they’re passionate about and to find a lot of people they love.

Head of School Donald M. Austin commended the students for their leadership during turbulent times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, and noted that the biggest lessons learned over the past year were resiliency and adaptability.

Mr. Austin called on the Class of 2025 to get involved, make new friends, be patient, make connections with teachers and prioritize strong friendships as they move on to the Upper School.

Eighth grade speaker Abby Hsu reflected on the awkward years of sixth grade, before the Class of 2025 became the leaders of the Middle School. She thanked all of the parents, faculty and staff on behalf of the eighth grade student-body and noted that the memories made in the Middle School will carry the students forward into their next journey in the Upper School. Evan Breckman gave humorous closing remarks following the awarding of certificates, lightheartedly sending the eighth grade class on to the Upper School with joy and laughter.
