11 Selected to North Jersey Regional Wind Ensembles and Orchestras

Several Newark Academy instrumental students were accepted into the North Jersey School Music Association’s regional wind ensembles and orchestras.

Sixth grader Laura Lin ’28 was accepted into the intermediate orchestra. Upper Schoolers Julia Zheng ’24, Lynna King ’25, Alyx Martos ’25, Juliet Bu ’23, Carmen Dai ’23, Mina Ko ’25 and Ian Zhang ’23 were accepted into the advanced groups.

Julia Li ’23 and Spencer Nowak ’22 also made noteworthy accomplishments, each placing first on bass and bassoon, respectively. Pamela Davidson ’23 made principal second violin, placing fifth out of 76 violins auditioning in the region.

“Newark Academy instrumentalists are dedicated to excellence,” says Orchestra Director Oliver Hagen. “Our program thrives off of students’ personal sense of motivation and individual practice commitment. Our thriving program, in turn, helps prepare students to succeed at their goals, and thus there is symbiosis.”

The North Jersey School Music Association includes participation from students throughout Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and Warren counties. In an effort to stimulate wider public interest in school music and music education, the NJSMA provides performance opportunities to advance the caliber of music performances in schools.
