Keys and Silliman Earn Superior Medals at NJ Thespian Festival

Newark Academy sophomore acting students Kieri Keys ’24 and David Silliman ’24 earned Superior Medals for their acting duet at the school’s first appearance in the New Jersey Thespian Festival.

Kieri and David, two members of NA’s International Thespian troupe, were recognized with the highest level of achievement during NA’s first year of entry in the festival. The NA Theatre program inaugurated its first International Thespian troupe earlier this academic year.

Newark Academy was joined by 400 other schools throughout New Jersey in this regional competition. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the festival became virtual at the last-minute, leaving just a six-day turnaround for students to rehearse and film their entries. With this accolade, Kieri and David are now invited to perform their scene for the International Thespian Festival in Indiana in June 2022 during which they will compete for scholarship opportunities.

"We were thrilled to get a superior awarded score for two of our members. This is just the beginning for us and I am so grateful that I get to do this work with our students at Newark Academy," said Director of Theatre Arts Rachel Shapiro Cooper.
