NA Welcomes New Coaches for Track and Field and Boys’ Tennis

The Department of Athletics welcomes Stephen Bienko and Bob Bynum to Newark Academy as the track and field and boys’ tennis coaches, respectfully. Ted Gilbreath, Director of Athletics, is excited about the high level of energy and knowledge that Coach Bienko and Coach Bynum will bring to the programs.
Stephen Bienko joins NA from the world of private business but has a long, personal history in track and field. A former decathlete at Villanova University, Coach Bienko has worked extensively with a wide variety of high-level athletes including NA alumni and U.S.T.A. professional Justin Gimelstob. The diverse skill set required to compete in the decathlon has gifted him with a technical knowledge that very few track coaches in the state can claim. Over the last ten years, Jon and Susan Olesky have built a championship level program at Newark Academy and Gilbreath is confident that Coach Bienko will maintain the program’s upward trajectory.

Bob Bynum has more than 40 years of experience as a tennis professional and high school coach. Among many other distinctions, he is a certified “Elite Professional” by the U.S.P.T.A. and has been recognized as a high school “Coach of the Year” at several schools over the course of his career. The NA boys’ tennis team has a history of tremendous success and requires a special coach to keep the program functioning at its traditional level - and Coach Bynum is that individual. He brings a wealth of experience to NA, including preparing individual players, such as Rahman Smiley ’98, for demanding U.S.T.A. events and continued success with high school teams.

Students will have the opportunity to meet their new coaches in early January 2017.
