Sixth Grade Students Learn About Conservative and Liberal Party Values By Watching and Re-Enacting Gubernatorial Candidate Debates

On November 2, 2017, sixth-grade students in the humanities class “Community & Self,” which emphasizes connections between course studies and current events, presented a re-enactment of the gubernatorial candidate debate to their sixth-grade class peers in the Middle School Commons. Students also volunteered for roles of news blogger, news reporter, and campaign signage. In preparation for their debate, the students watched and studied the real debates as well as did research including interviewing an adult about the elections. Discussions in the classroom examined candidate’s strategies and party philosophies and issues. Finally, students performed a bipartisan debate, representing the candidates for governor in New Jersey.
