ARTS WORKSHOPS

Arts Workshops, taught by Newark Academy faculty, offer students a variety of performing arts programs. Featured this summer are Improv Workshop, JTole Jazz Academy, Advanced Modern Dance, Tap Dance, Musical Theatre Dance, Shakespeare’s Globe, and Page-to-Stage.

  • Advanced Modern Dance - Grades 7-12

    Session Dates and Tuition: June 25 - June 29, $300
    Times:
    1:00-4:00 pm
     
    This course is designed to challenge the serious contemporary dancer with elements of modern dance exercises from the Graham, Horton and Limón styles. Students will also work on improvisational skills and choreography.Students will learn a piece of choreography to perform on the Newark Academy stage with costume and lighting at the end of the session.  Students may also choose to work on their own solos to be performed at the final performance.  Eight years of previous dance experience in ballet, jazz, or modern dance is the prerequisite for this course.

  • Intermediate/Advanced Tap Dance - Grades 7-12

    Session Dates and Tuition: July 23 - July 27, $300
    Times:
    1:00-4:00 pm

    This course is for tap students who love to perform!  The students will learn a full piece of choreography and perform this piece on the Newark Academy stage with costume and lighting at the end of the session. In addition, students will be taught the elements of composition and will choreograph sections of the piece themselves.  Five years of tap experience is the prerequisite for this course and the level of the choreography will be tailored for each dancer and his/her ability.

  • Musical Theatre / Dance - Grades 5-8

    Session Dates and Tuition: July 30 - August 3, $300
    Times:
    1:00-4:00 pm

    This course is designed for any student interested in the dance element of musical theater.  Do you love to sing and act, but wish you had more dance experience to audition for your school musical?  Do you love musicals and wish you could perform to music from them more often?  Do you love other styles of dance, but have yet to focus on musical theater dance?  Here is your chance!  This course is open to all levels as the choreography will be tailored to each student.  Those with significant dance experience will work on complex choreography and serious technique, and those just beginning will learn the basics.  All students will perform in a group piece and more advanced students may also choose to work on and perform a self-choreographed solo, with guidance from the instructor.

  • Shakespeare’s Globe - Grades 6-9

    Session Dates and Tuition: June 25 - June 29, $300
    Times:
    1:00-4:00 pm

    Students attending this workshop will be introduced to the Bard through sonnets, monologues and scenes. We will infuse joy into this classical language so it becomes exciting and accessible for our young thespians! The workshop will culminate with a final performance. All students will have a completely memorized, rehearsed and nuanced performance piece from an actual Shakespearean work. 
    If weather permits, final performances will be held outside in our amphitheater!

  • Improv Workshop - Grades 6-8

    Session Dates and Tuition: July 9 - July 13, $300
    Times:
    1:00-4:00 pm

    Spontaneity and imagination are the cornerstones of this course where students learn the basics of improvisational comedy.  Through a series of fun exercises and theater games, students will gain confidence on stage as they learn the fundamental skills required to perform comedic scenes without a script. Students will learn to work collaboratively with others as they build skills that can be translated to other kinds of theatrical work.

  • Page to Stage - Grades 6-9

    Session Dates and Tuition: July 23 - July 27 $300
    Times:
    1:00-4:00 pm

    In this workshop, students will learn how to compose their own short play. The class will refine and read each play together and then choose a few to stage! The week will culminate with a lit, staged reading of original plays. It is sure to be a wonderfully collaborative experience for all involved

  • JTole Jazz Academy - Grades 7-12

    Session Dates and Tuition: July 9 - July 20; Concert on July 20, $1,600
    Times:
    1:00-6:00 pm

    Our Newark Academy Jazz mission is to educate and inspire young people to be confident, creative, and expressive individuals through jazz music.  Students new to jazz, as well as experienced young jazz musicians, are welcome to sign up for our two-week session.  Students will be introduced to improvisation, practice techniques, jazz repertoire, theory, and ensemble playing by renowned jazz musicians and experienced educators.  In addition to master classes and visiting artists, faculty will play with student groups providing young musicians with top-notch instruction and invaluable real-world experience. The two-week workshop will conclude with a concert showcasing each ensemble’s work.
