JTole Jazz Camp
Learn jazz music as a language.
The JTole Jazz Camp is a one-of-a-kind experience for students in Grades 6-12 who want to study jazz or start playing jazz.
The camp runs Monday through Friday, July 14 - July 25, from 1:00-5:00 pm daily. . During the two-week program, students have the opportunity to play in a big band as well as in a small group. A variety of clinics are offered, with a focus on learning a specific instrument, improvisation and how to practice in an efficient way. Students are guided by some of the most accomplished jazz musicians and educators in the world. Tuition for the two-week program is $1200.
Each student will learn to play jazz at their specific level and progress to their potential. Students will be assessed and placed in groups based on both experience and ability.
- Beginners will receive the support required to have a positive introduction to jazz
- Advanced students will have opportunities to play with professional musicians and other advanced students
Julius Tolentino, renowned jazz musician and Newark Academy's Director of the Jazz Program, is the founder of the JTole Jazz Camp. The JTole experience culminates into an exciting public performance, showcasing the student groups along with some special guests!

Meet the Director
Since 2007, Julius Tolentino has led Newark Academy’s jazz program, with his ensembles winning numerous top competitions. He also teaches at Princeton and Montclair State University and directs Jazz at Lincoln Center’s High School Jazz Academy. Honored with DownBeat’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Jazz Education in 2024, Julius continues to educate through JTole Music, offering workshops and resources to jazz students worldwide. Under his tutelage, Newark Academy's jazz band, Chameleon, earned first place at Essentially Ellington.
