ANTHONY MALDANDO ’19 ENJOYS ECUADOR THANKS TO FEINBERG TRAVEL GRANT

When Anthony Maldano ’19 decided to travel to Ecuador over the summer to work at local hospitals as the recipient of the Feinberg Travel Grant, he chose the South American country for two reasons: Aside from giving back to community in need, Anthony also got to visit the country that his parents and most of his family are from.

“I volunteered at a public hospital in Quito that was very busy during my shift of 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.,” Anthony said. “I spent the first few days helping out nurses in traumatology by cleaning and making beds, washing clothes, and doing rounds to check if any patients needed anything. By midweek, I started helping out in oral and maxillofacial surgery by cleaning equipment and distributing them to nurses and doctors.”
The experience helped Anthony solidify his interest in the medical/healthcare field and is something he hopes to study and pursue in the future. Ultimately, Anthony found the Feinberg Travel Grant gave him an “unmatchable opportunity,” and was truly another Immersion Experience.

“My time in Ecuador really opened my eyes to the importance of immersing yourself in a culture when trying to master a language,” Anthony said. “Interacting with native speakers will improve your vocabulary no matter how fluent you are.”
