Middle School

Newark Academy’s Middle School is a unique place. It’s a high-functioning intellectual environment, but it’s also relaxed and fun. Teachers here want to work with this age group and have years of experience doing so. We’ve designed a program around the developmental needs of adolescents that is skills-based and exploration-focused. We take young students out of their comfort zone in every way—asking them to play a sport each season, dance in a concert, actively engage in the classroom.

When you visit campus, you will see the evidence of our success. You will see that we can trust students to play soccer outside without direct supervision. You might pass a group of students who’ve chosen to study together during their free period. You might walk into an English class and hear a discussion comparing attitudes in “The Fault in Our Stars” and “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” You might see students in the Middle School office working with their teachers and engaging in thoughtful discussions about school and global news. These are scenes that play out every day because students feel comfortable engaging intellectually.
