Asher Herman ’24 Named a World Food Prize Borlaug Scholar

This past year, Newark Academy’s Asher Herman ’24 was named a Borlaug Scholar by the New Jersey Youth Institute World Food Prize at the Rutgers University School of Environmental and Biological Science.

As part of the application process, Asher pulled together a research paper in which he looked into the link between renewable energy and food insecurity in the United Arab Emirates, and enlisted Director of Community Service Sarah Fischer as his school sponsor.

“The New Jersey Youth Institute at Rutgers University prompted me and over 100 other students from New Jersey to critically think about our society’s issues of food insecurity rooted deeply in interconnected topics,” said Asher. “I presented to and collaborated with other students to expand upon our ideas, learning from everyone there. This was an electrifying experience that allowed me to approach something I am passionate about in a collaborative and fresh way, and I hope more Newark Academy students can utilize this opportunity in the future.”

In conjunction with the World Food Prize Foundation, the New Jersey Institute at Rutgers brings high school students from all over New Jersey to learn about critical global issues, network with local leaders, engage in hands-on-activities and explore exciting ways to become effective change agents in their own communities. Students who present research and recommendations on ways to solve key global challenges in a short speech and small group discussions with statewide experts earn status as a Borlaug Scholar.
