“Color-Light-Spirit” on Exhibition at NA's Teiger Gallery

K.L. McKenna is showing a body of work at the David Teiger ’47 Gallery for Studio Arts at Newark Academy from September 5 through October 6, 2023. Her exhibit, Color-Light-Spirit, features landscapes of the American West.

Her inspiration for western scenes comes from childhood summers spent in Wyoming and Colorado with her paleontologist father prospecting for fossils and dinosaurs. In these luminous paintings, monumental rock formations meet flat plains; angular roads eerily cut through landscapes seemingly uninhabited; endless sky and natural geometries dominate. While McKenna employs abstract elements, figurative shapes are recognizable and tangible somewhere between realism and abstraction.

"My goal is to create indelible images that are uniquely individual, each with their own identity, personality and purpose, while at the same time exhibiting a recognizable voice," says McKenna.

In addition to sharing her beautiful work with the Newark Academy community, McKenna will convey her expertise, knowledge and process with the Newark Academy art students.

K.L. McKenna is one of the most successful contemporary American artists on the landscape today. Her work is featured in galleries and private collections throughout the world.

The Teiger Gallery is located in the center of the Elizabeth B. McGraw Arts Center on the campus of Newark Academy in Livingston, New Jersey. If you are interested in visiting the exhibit, please contact Gallery Director Elaine Brodie at ebrodie@newarka.edu
