Media Release: Livingston's Newark Academy Showing “The Many Faces of Newark” Exhibit

 

In honor of Newark Academy’s 250th anniversary, the school chose to showcase Davis's exhibit, “The Many Faces of Newark,” to pay homage to its origin city of Newark.

Davis has been a fine art photographer, professor, muralist and filmmaker for 14 years. His work is influenced by street and portrait photography as well as contemporary culture. “The Many Faces of Newark” features documentary-style street portraits that capture intimate moments of engagement.

“It’s very meaningful to be showcasing at Newark Academy,” Davis says. “The fact that NA began in Newark in 1774 … I feel like with this photo exhibit, we’re strengthening the connection between NA and the City of Newark and honoring the city and its history and the people that are living there creating everyday history.”

Davis’s works are currently archived in prominent institutions such as The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The Newark Public Library, The Thomas J. Watson Library at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Bronx Museum. 

“As we celebrate our 250th anniversary, I was eager to find a Newark-based artist whose work celebrates the city of our founding,” says NA Art Teacher and Gallery Director Elaine Brodie. “With Davis’s photos gracing our walls, our gallery is alive with the vibrancy of this historic city and the people who live there.”

In addition to sharing his work with the Newark Academy community, Davis visited classes to share his knowledge, process and philosophy with students. As a teaching artist, he uses his expertise to facilitate workshops that demonstrate the importance of keeping film developing alive as well as documenting the many faces and architecture of Newark, NJ.

“It was inspiring to learn about the enriching experience of Chrystofer Davis and the message that he exhibits in his photography,” says West Orange resident Sachi Goel ’25, an NA advanced photography student. “I found his use of film instead of digital photography a unique and nostalgic attribute of his work.”
