Upper School Students Will Volunteer on Earth Day

On April 22, Earth Day, more than 30 Upper School Students will volunteer their time in the third annual beach cleanup at Sandy Hook Beach, sponsored and organized by the Marine Biology Club.
Students will learn first-hand about environmental issues and how they can educate the community to continue to protect the environment. And, for the second year in a row, they are participating in the Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweep (COA) to rid the beach of debris and protect marine life.

“One of the things I like best about partnering with COA is that in addition to cleaning up the beaches, we also categorize and quantify all of the litter that is picked up, helping to provide valuable data that is eventually published in annual reports,” says Kristin Duzak, Assistant to the Dean of Students and Marine Biology Club faculty advisor. “Reports like these are vital to agencies from the local to the national level in efforts from creating anti-litter campaigns to supporting legislation that mitigates microplastics pollution like the Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015.”
