Newark Academy’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Hosts Mental Health Assembly

The Newark Academy Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion hosted an all-school assembly about mental health and resiliency featuring keynote speaker Michelle Stevenson, chair of the department of student health, wellness and physical education at Kent Place School, on Thursday, November 17 in the Coraci Performance Hall.
During the assembly, Stevenson talked about the importance of resilience and engaged students in several "talk and turn" discussions with each other. Students assessed their self-awareness and where they fell on the "drama meter" and learned how to identify renewing and depleting emotions. Stevenson concluded her presentation by teaching students a heart-focused breathing technique that they can use to calm their nervous systems when it gets adrenalized and build resilience.

“When your nervous system gets adrenalized, how do you calm it down? You’ve got to breathe,” Stevenson said. “What I’m encouraging you to do is to really tap into what’s happening with your body physiologically.”
