• Writing Workshop Grades - 6-8

  Session Dates and Tuition: June 24– August 2, $1100

  Times:

  8:05-10:10 am; 10:25 am-12:30 pm; 1:00-3:00 pm / Grades 6, 7

  8:05-10:10 am; 1:00-3:00 pm / Grade 8
  
  

  This six-week course is designed for students who need to improve their writing abilities. The course will address student weaknesses in usage, style, organization, and revision through skill development. Students will also learn how best to employ structure at the sentence, paragraph, and essay level. Separate classes are offered for each grade level. Depending on enrollment, afternoon classes may combine two consecutive grades.

• Literature Workshop - Grades 6-11

  Session Dates and Tuition: June 24– August 2, $1100

  Times:

  Through nightly readings, class discussions, and a variety of writing tasks, students will explore the structures, themes and modes of expression in novels, plays, short stories, and poems. Students will develop their skills of close reading and analytical writing over the course of the six-week course. Separate classes are offered for grades 6 – 9; a combined class is offered for grades 10,11.  The course may be taken for advance credit in English, and with Advanced Writing, represents one year of credit.

• Writing Clinic - Grades 7-10

  This three-week course is designed for students who want to develop their writing skills. The course will help students who need to improve basic skills including grammar, punctuation, and sentence and paragraph formation. It will help students to advance their ability to find errors in sample sentences, write stronger sentences, and develop arguments with appropriate academic diction. Students are encouraged to bring questions to the group to help focus our areas of study.
  
  

• Writing for High School - Grade 9

  Session Dates and Tuition: June 24– August 2, $1100

  This six-week course is designed to meet the needs of students who are entering 9th grade in the fall and are determined to develop their high school writing skills. Students will spend a week learning how to approach each genre of high school writing, including personal essays, analytic, persuasive, and creative writing. Writing for High School focuses on understanding structure, learning how to meet assignment requirements, and paying attention to the small details, such as common grammatical errors, that harm students’ performance. Classes use regular ‘grammar bites’ to foster student familiarity with commas, apostrophes, and the active voice; as well as weekly writer’s workshops to encourage students to develop their own writing voice.

• Writing for High School - Grades 10-11

  Session Dates and Tuition: June 24– August 2, $1100

  This six-week course is designed to meet the needs of students who are entering 10th or 11th grade in the fall and are determined to develop their high school writing skills across the curriculum. The course is designed to support student writing ability by teaching practices that build competence and confidence.  The skill-based approach takes students through a step-by-step process to draft and complete an Analytic Paper, Research Paper, and Personal Essay.  Each unit includes: how to approach a writing prompt and understand what teachers want, common grammatical mistakes and how to avoid them, how to develop ideas into arguments, and how to use evidence to support a thesis.  Students will write multiple drafts and learn from instructor’s feedback how to recognize patterns in their own writing, and edit their own work, leaving the summer prepared for writing in English, Humanities, and college applications.

• Advanced Writing - Grades 9-11

  This six-week course will introduce the competent student writer to the development of a mature style through studies of audience, purpose, diction, sentence formation, and paragraph continuity. Students will examine and practice a variety of writing modes: exposition, argumentation, description, and narration, while also developing the skills necessary to be a successful essay writer. This course may be taken for advance credit in English, and with Literature Workshop, represents one year of credit.
